B.A. in History Degree Sheet
A Bachelor of Arts in History provides students with the intellectual discipline as well as the research, analytical, and communication skills that will prepare them for careers in teaching, government, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. The history degree program also serves as a useful foundation for professional degrees in law, history, library studies, public history, or other disciplines in social sciences and humanities.
About the Program
The skills necessary for the study of history are highly practical and prized by graduate schools, professional schools, and employers.
The BA in History is a 120-credit hour program. In order to complete the program, students must select either a standard concentration or the education concentration. Those who select the standard concentration in history are required to complete 35 hours in the major, thus making it possible for students to incorporate a second BA major in fields such as Philosophy, Spanish, or the Humanities.
- To complete a BA in History with a Secondary Education Concentration, students must
satisfy the “Requirements for CHSS Majors” and fulfill the coursework listed below.
Student Teaching courses, SED 4301 and SED 4302, require 15-week full-time supervised
work in grades 8 - 12 (may be one or more grades). Courses identified as belonging
to the same Professional Development (PD) series must be taken concurrently.
- Students majoring in History/Social Studies Secondary Education Concentration or the History Secondary Education Concentration must be admitted to UHD’s Department of Urban Education’s Teacher Candidacy program to take required courses in Professional Development I, II, and III. Admission to Teacher Candidacy at UHD for students pursuing either of these history tracks require: (1) core completion; (2) preparatory requirement completion; (3) a minimum of 24 earned semester credit hours of HIST courses; and (4) an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Students with a concentration in education must take HIST 1305 and HIST 1306 to fulfill the history core requirement.
