Wind Turbine (WT) Technician

Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing energy sources in the world. Wind energy currently supplies 10% of all the electricity produced in the U.S.  There are over 140,000 wind turbine technicians employed in the U.S. and the number is expected to more than double within the next decade. Global installed wind generation capacity, both onshore and offshore, has increased by a factor of 100 in the past two decades, jumping from 8.2 giga watts (GW) in 2002 to 850 GW in 2023.

Wind Turbine (WT) Technician online Certificate program is intended to address a global need for people who are skilled in servicing, diagnosing, repairing and installing wind turbines and related equipment.  Students in this program learn the skills they need to feel confident working in entry-level positions.

The program is delivered in an asynchronous “on demand” online format, which allows the student to start and finish modules entirely at their own pace. The average completion time is 32 weeks. Each module has a final exam that is administered online. Program curriculum material is delivered and supported by a combination of online resources including real-time tutorial support. The interactive curriculum uses text, video, 2D and 3D animations, photos, audio clips and state-of-the-art interactive electrical/electronic/PLC simulations.   A proprietary 3D wind turbine simulator is included as part of the training package.

The WT Technician program includes three simulation software products: 3DLab, CircuitLogix Pro, and PLCLogix 500. The 3DLab simulation software is intended to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of electricity and basic electronics using "real-world" components in a user-friendly lab environment. The CircuitLogix simulator is a more advanced electronics simulation package that is used to enhance the students knowledge of WT communication systems, as well as power electronic devices and circuits, including converters, inverters and AC generator control systems.

The program includes the following modules:

  1. Introduction to Wind Turbines
  2. Safety, Maintenance & Repairs
  3. Wind Energy Theory
  4. Basic Electricity
  5. Direct Current Circuits
  6. Alternating Current Circuits
  7. Power Electronics
  8. Transformers, Motors & Generators
  9. Electrical Code & Blueprint Reading
  10. Mechanical & Hydraulic Systems
  11. Monitoring & Communication
  12. Programmable Logic Controllers
  13. Wind Farms
  14. SCADA
