Turnitin Framework

New Turnitin Framework Logo

We are pleased to announce Turnitin Plagiarism Framework is now available within Canvas! The Turnitin LTI integration will be discontinued in Canvas at the end of the Fall 2023 Semester. The new integration allows Turnitin's Similarity Report to be fully integrated with a Canvas Assignment.

The primary difference between the Turnitin Framework and the previous version of Turnitin (Turnitin LTI), is the new Turnitin Framework can be used and launched from Canvas SpeedGrader and originality information is indicated in the Canvas Gradebook. The Turnitin Plagiarism Framework integration is preferred by faculty who want to use Turnitin as a plagiarism deterrent, but like the grading and feedback tools native to Canvas.

New Functionality

  • Group Submissions: Turnitin Framework can correctly handle group submissions for group assignments within Canvas.
  • Resubmissions: If students resubmit an assignment to Canvas, instructors will be able to see the originality scores and reports for both original and subsequent submissions.
  • Multiple Submissions: If an assignment requires students to submit multiple files to the same assignment, Turnitin will provide originality reports for all files that are in formats it can check.
  • Canvas Peer Assignments: Peer review assignment features in Canvas work using the Turnitin plagiarism framework.
  • Student View: The Test Student can submit assignments configured using the Turnitin plagiarism framework.
  • Rubrics: Canvas Rubrics attached to Turnitin-enabled assignments are visible on the assignment page to students and instructors.

Loss of functionality

  • Turnitin Rubrics: Rubrics created in Turnitin will no longer work. Turnitin Framework will utilize Canvas Rubrics.
  • Online Grading Features: The use of the Turnitin Feedback Studio is no longer supported. Turnitin Framework is integrated with Canvas Speed Grader.
  • PeerMark: PeerMark is not available in the Turnitin Framework; however, Peer review assignment features in Canvas can be used.
  • Turnitin LTI: Complete loss of access to assignments and submission via Canvas. To view submissions/assignments from previous semesters, instructors will need to login to Turnitin.com with the same email and password you use to access Canvas. (You may need to reset the password or set up a security question when prompted) Once you are logged into Turnitin, you can then locate all of the assignments you have previously created. Turnitin LTI links from previous courses copied into new course shells will no longer work once the Turnitin LTI is discontinued.

Actions you will need to take

As noted above, Turnitin LTI links from previous courses copied into new course shells will no longer work once the LTI is discontinued at the end of the Fall 2023 semester. All Turnitin LTI assignments will need to be changed to Canvas Assignments with the Turnitin Framework enabled. You can use instructions provided in our Creating Turnitin Assignments in Canvas document to edit the assignment.

Important Notes:

  • Assignments that require originality checking must be configured to use Turnitin Plagiarism Framework before students begin submitting assignments. It is not possible to retroactively check a student's work that has already been submitted.
  • Turnitin Plagiarism Framework cannot be used with quizzes or discussions.
  • Using Turnitin Plagiarism Framework with Canvas preserves the ability to bulk download student submissions in Canvas, to use groups assignments, and to view Canvas Rubrics.
  • When using Turnitin as a LTI and through the Plagiarism Framework in the same Canvas course, you cannot have two assignments with the same name as it will generate errors. After copying a course containing Turnitin LTI links, edit the assignment names of all LTI assignments before creating new assignments in the Plagiarism Framework.

Example: If you currently have an "Assignment 1" using the Turnitin LTI, you cannot have an "Assignment 1" in Turnitin Framework until the LTI assignment link has been removed.
