2023 One Main Event Award Winners

One Main Event is an awards program hosted by Student Activities and recognizes organizations and individuals whose contributions to the University of Houston-Downtown make student life amazing and create positive change. Award nominations are submitted and highlight those students, faculty, staff, and organizations who have shown tremendous commitment, character, and hard work throughout the academic school year.

Best Visual Design/T-Shirt Winner-African Student Association
This award recognizes the organization's efforts in graphic and visual arts through costume/t-shirt design. The organization would have proven to have created a high-quality, unique, and visually appealing t-shirt/costume design to help enhance the organization's service and contribute to recruitment, retention, and student engagement efforts within the UHD community.

Best Visual Design/Flyer Winner- Psychology Club and Gator Gyals
This award recognizes the organization's efforts in visual arts, creativity, and graphic design through event flyers and marketing materials. The organization would have proven to have created a high-quality, unique, and visually appealing flyer/promotional design to help enhance the program, event, or service provided to the UHD community.

Most Creative/Special Program Award Winner- Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALFA)
This award recognizes the organization's efforts, through a creative/special program, to provide service in the community, involvement in professional, academic, and leadership development experiences, and overall impact on campus life and learning for students. The organization would have proven to demonstrate commitment to improving the college community and the leadership and service to others,

Rising Star Award- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
This award recognizes a new student organization and their outstanding achievement. Through their commitment and special initiatives, organizations have made a significant impact on the Office of Student Activities and the UHD community throughout the academic year.

Community Service Award Winners- Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc./ Latina Achieve
This award recognizes the organization that has demonstrated the highest degree of volunteer service contributions to the surrounding UHD and Houston communities during the current academic year. It will be based on quantity of service/volunteer hours as well as quality of service and programming. This award can also be given to an organization that has done one or more outstanding service projects.

Academic Achievement Award Winner- Sheena Peterson
This award will be given to a highly involved student leader high cumulative GPA for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Greek Organization of the Year Winner- Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
This award recognizes an outstanding NPHC/MGC Greek organization that has built a solid organization and has achieved success in accomplishing its goals. It will be based on the organization's mission and the activities it has undertaken to complete the mission, demonstration of teamwork within the organization and with other organizations, and the positive impact the organization has on the student body.

Greek Man Award Winner- Richard Solomon, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
This award recognizes an individual (one male) within the council who best exemplifies the ideal fraternity member. The award will recognize the person that has been actively involved within their chapter, within the Greek community, and within the UHD community at large. They will have promoted Greek Life and their individual organization in a positive manner through their leadership, scholarship, and character.

Greek Woman Award Winner – Jennifer Salazar, Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc.
This award recognizes an individual (one female) within the council who best exemplifies the ideal sorority member. The award will recognize the person that has been actively involved within their chapter, within the Greek community, and within the UHD community at large. They will have promoted Greek Life and their individual organization in a positive manner through their leadership, scholarship, and character.

Student Organization of the Year Award- Black Student Association
This award recognizes an outstanding student group that has built a solid organization and has achieved success in accomplishing its goals. It will be based on the student organization's mission and the activities it has undertaken to complete the mission, the demonstration of teamwork within the organization and with other organizations, and the positive impact the organization has on the student body.

Advisor of the Year Award- Dr. Antoinette Wilson
This award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job in his/her role as an advisor of a student organization during the current academic year.

Student L.E.A.D. Award – Winner- Madeleine Diagne
This award recognizes a significant achievement by an individual student leader in an active registered student organization. This award is the highest honor given to a student leader at UHD in student involvement. Through their leadership skills and initiative, nominees have made a significant impact on the UHD community throughout the academic year.

Director's Award Winner- Jose Vazquez

This is a new award as of 2023 by Director Tremaine Kwasikpui. This award recognizes family and legacy. It honors the sacrifices made on a daily for student success. For this year's first recipient, it could not be more fitting for Associate Director Jose Vazquez and this is in loving memory of “Rocket"!
