UHD Competitive Scholarship Tuition Waiver Requirements

The University of Houston-Downtown may adjust tuition and fees for nonresident and international students who hold a Competitive Scholarship of at least $1,000 per term. The Competitive Scholarship award must be entirely from one scholarship fund, for which the student is enrolled. The waiver adjustment of tuition and fees can be made without regard to the length of time the student has resided in Texas. The student must compete with other students, including Texas residents, for the Competitive Scholarship and the award must be granted by a College/Departmental Scholarship Committee, which is officially recognized by the UHD administration. Therefore, a scholarship application process must be in place as part of the scholarship criteria before a Competitive Scholarship Tuition Waiver can be granted.

Purpose:

To allow the granting of a waiver of nonresident and international tuition charges to individuals who receive a Competitive Scholarship fund in the amount of $1,000 per term; scholarship recipient must have been in competition for scholarship opportunities, which were open to all students, both residents and nonresidents (out-of-state and international.)

Eligibility Requirements:

Nonresident or International students must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the competitive scholarship award. The student may receive a waiver of nonresident or international tuition for the period of time covered by the scholarship award. College/Department must submit a UHD Certification for Academic Competitive Scholarship Waiver form to the Office of Scholarships to request a waiver for each eligible student along with their Scholarship Memo award. The specified Competitive Scholarship fund must be posted on the granting College/Department’s scholarship webpage for all UHD students to view.

Per instructions from the Provost’s Office, each Competitive Scholarship fund must be approved by the General Scholarship Committee prior to the granting of a tuition waiver. Therefore, the Competitive Scholarship fund must be approved in advance for upcoming years. The Colleges/Departments will submit their complete listing of scholarship funds at the beginning of March each year. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will send out a request notice for this information each year in February. All Competitive Scholarship funds must be approved by the General Scholarship Committee during their April meeting for the upcoming academic year.

**UHD Certification for Academic Competitive Scholarship Waiver Form must be submitted prior to the granting of a waiver; College/Departmental representatives may obtain this form by contacting Dr. Roshanna Mitchell, Assistant Director, Compliance & Scholarships: mitchellr@uhd.edu.
