Job Summary

The Director, Sports and Fitness provides the overall vision, leadership, direction, and supervision for the Department of Sports and Fitness, and ensures that the department's programs and services align with the overall mission of the division and university.

Duties

  • Provides leadership and direction to the department through the short-term and long-term planning of services and programs offered.
  • Manages the department budget and finances; plans and approves department purchases, contracts, charges, and payroll.
  • Ensures that department facilities are properly maintained and operated, reducing the university's risk.
  • Collaborates and meets with department staff, supervisors, division staff, and other university employees.
  • Devises, implements, reviews, and evaluates the effectiveness of department policies and procedures.

  • Has primary responsibility for conducting performance evaluations and making recommendations for hiring and dismissing employees.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Master's degree in Sports Administration or Management or a related field

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of related job experience, including experience in sports and fitness related field, in managing a department with full time employees, in programming in a higher education environment, and in facility operations management.

License/Certification:

  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the operations of a Sports and Fitness department in a higher education environment, and of the related trends, issues, and accepted practices.

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Abilities:

  • Ability to use multiple software systems;

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks. May occasionally be exposed to adverse weather conditions. Must have the ability to move items of up to 45lbs.

  • Monitors staff interactions with customers for professional conduct, consistent application of university policies and procedures, and follow up of outstanding requests.
  • Assumes responsibility for addressing complex or unusual requests.

  • Formulates plans and strategies to proactively resolve anticipated problems.
  • Prudently responds to unforeseen problems through careful consideration and analysis of problem and relevant information and circumstances.
  • Recognizes and apprises appropriate university administrator when resolution requires senior management input and/or approval.
