Job Summary

The Manager of Environmental Health and Safety assists with the environmental health and safety programs for the University. The Manager handles the business aspects and project cost estimates for remediation after the scope of work and funding have been approved. Assists with ordering safety equipment and supplies and tracking EHS staff activities.

Duties

  • Creates, updates, and develops campus occupational safety, health, and environmental programs to strategies and meet objectives and monitor their effectiveness
  • Conducts or coordinates inspections and services with in-house staff and outside vendors to assure compliance with environmental and occupational safety, along with associated fire and life safety regulations. Collaborates with UHD Fire Safety
  • Ensures environmental health and safety of engineering labs, service shops, and studios by conducting or assisting audits, coordinating services, providing training in environmental health and safety, issues, and overseeing the disposal of hazardous waste
  • Tracks and submits budget costs and payments for construction/renovation projects and every day operational items
  • Prepares and maintains safety manuals and incident reports related to environmental health and safety
  • Serves on campus committees regarding environmental health and safety, security, and risk management
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and/or surveys required to submits to external entities as requested or required

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or a related field

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of four (5) years of progressive experience in occupational safety and health

License/Certification:

  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical certification or licensing related to the position

Knowledge:

  • In
    • depth knowledge of principles & practices within academic or professional field; interpretation of technical and detailed guidelines, policies, and procedures to properly make sound judgments and problem solving.
  • Knowledge of professional field equipment is required

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication(verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills;
  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has occasional exposure to physical risks.
  • Work involves occasional exposure to elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, airborne particles, smoke, oils, and unpleasant odors. May, on rare occasions, be required to work in a confined space or in a high, dangerous place
  • May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, or the risk of an electric shock
  • May frequently be exposed to potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents or chemicals, and occasionally be exposed to potentially hazardous bodily fluids
  • Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Must have the ability to move items of up to 40lbs
  • May be required to drive or operate the university vehicles
