Collaborative Learning Community Center (S735)

The aim of the Collaborative Learning Community Center (CMSCLCC) is to tutor and mentor mathematics and computer science majors, and all CST scholarship recipients who are enrolled in mathematics and computer science courses. As students collaborate, the younger scholars will learn to be the best they can be from the examples set forth by our upperclassmen. The CMSCLCC is located in room S735.

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE)

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is generally your first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed engineer (P.E.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET or ETAC/ABET accredited program.

The following are suggestions to prepare for the FE:

  • Take the FE exam while you are a senior at UHD or soon after you graduate. Passing the FE exam can benefit your career significantly.
  • Form a group of fellow students to review the topics of the FE Exam.
  • Talk with your faculty about the FE and FE test preparation resources.
  • Keep a careful record of all your engineering experience.  You can use NCEES as the record keeping, this agency works with all the States.

To take the test, you must do the following:

  • Submit an application, transcripts and related documentation to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE.)
  • Register for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) administers the FE exam. The FE exam is a computer-based exam administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers(https://ncees.org/engineering/fe/). 

Before you take the exam:  

  • Be familiar with the NCEES calculator policies and models permitted during the exam.
  • Be familiar with the FE Reference handbook supplied by NCEES. During the exam, you will have access to an electronic version of the handbook.  This handbook includes several topics of your major, use it to study and solve problems while you are taking UHD classes.
  • Be familiar with the current test policies. Learn more about them on this page and through the NCEES Examinee Guide. 

 

The FE exam includes 110-questions. The exam appointment time is 6 hours long and includes:

  • Nondisclosure agreement (2 minutes)
  • Tutorial (8 minutes)
  • Exam (5 hours and 20 minutes)
  • Scheduled break (25 minutes)

Testing sessions are available in Houston.

The Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE) permits graduates from any ETAC/ABET accredited program to become a Professional Engineer after passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, Professional Engineering (PE) exam, ethics examinations, providing appropriate documentation and professional references, and meeting work experience requirements. The Engineering Technology Commission of ABET accredits the Control and Instrumentation Engineering Technology, and Structural Analysis and Design programs and graduates are thus eligible to become Professional Engineers in Texas under these guidelines.
