Frequently Asked Questions – UHD Greek Life
Q. What are the requirements to join a fraternity or sorority?
A. See below (in order, alphabetically)
- Must be currently enrolled at UHD
- Must have creditably completed* at least one grading period (semester) as a full-time student at UHD, immediately preceding submission of application; *creditably completed is synonymous to earned full-time hours (12+ hours) for Spring or Fall session, whichever is applicable
- Must have cumulative and semester average of C+, immediately preceding submission of application. (In those universities using pass-fail, required competency or good standing systems of grading, either shall be acceptable.) C+ is equivalent to a 2.50 on a 4.0 scale if the school does not have a plus or minus on the grading scale
- Must be taking courses leading to her first/initial baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.
- Must be currently enrolled at UHD.
- Must have completed at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours.
- Must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or 1.75 on a 3.0 scale
- Must not be a member of any society holding membership in the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. or the Panhellenic Conference, Inc.
- Must be enrolled at UHD and be a full-time student (12 credit hours)
- Must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale
- Individuals who were or are an activated member of any Greek lettered organization, except honorary and professional organizations, are not eligible for membership
- Interested persons must be male students that exhibit good moral character
- Have a GPA of 2.5 or better
- Be registered/enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at UHD
- Have earned 12 credits at UHD to be eligible for consideration.
- Must be Full-Time (12 credit hours) undergraduate/graduate student.
- Must have cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or better. (No rounding of grade point averages will be accepted.)
- Cannot be a current member of a non-academic, non-professional or non-honorary sorority
- Cannot be a first-term freshmen (must have completed at least 12 credit hours)
- Be a full-time (12 credit hours) male student in good academic standing
- Possess a minimum 2.5 collegiate GPA.
- Not have previously completed intake/education process for any other fraternity.
- Should have completed at least one grading period (semester) and have obtained a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA based on a four-point scale
- Cannot hold active or previous membership in another intercollegiate fraternity, other than an honorary or professional fraternity.
- Must have 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Must be currently enrolled at UHD
- Be passionate about Sigma Lambda Beta’s history, mission, and values
- Must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) at UHD
- Must have a 2.50 cumulative GPA at the time of application
- If this is your first semester in college, you must show that you graduated high school with an unweighted G.P.A. of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student at UHD.
- Must have cumulative 2.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Must have a minimum of 12 college credit hours completed
- Transfer students require a cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale
- Students who have completed less than 12 credit hours must submit documentation of unconditional acceptance to the university.

- All undergraduate members are required to maintain a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale grade point average after membership intake into the sorority
Q. What will a student gain from joining a Greek organization that they won’t get from other groups?
A. Greek organizations are a great way for students to make an easier transition into college. For most students, Greek life becomes a home away from home. It becomes a place where close, lifelong friendships are created. Most of these groups emphasize leadership, scholarship, service, and fellowship among other important values.
Q. When does recruitment/intake take place?
A. Organizations belonging to the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) will typically have recruitment activities within the first 4 weeks of each semester. Organizations belonging to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) will typically host informational sessions in October and/or March.
Q. What is an informational session?
A. An informational is a meeting held by a chapter for prospective members who are seeking more information about the organization and how to join. An informational is typically the first step in the Membership Intake process for NPHC Organizations.
Q. What is Membership Intake?
A. Intake is the process by which NPHC organizations take in new members. This process begins with an information meeting or formal rush and concludes with initiation. Each organization does membership intake on their own schedule and not necessarily every semester.
Q. What is the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)?
A. Refers both to the local and national coordinating body for historically African American fraternities and sororities, also known as the “Divine Nine” (D9). Nationally, this council consists of 9 member organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta.
Q. Which NPHC organizations are currently active at UHD?
A. UHD current has 6 active NPHC organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.
Q. What is the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)?
A. The Multicultural Greek Council at UHD is an umbrella council for multicultural fraternities and sororities not a part of NPHC.
Q. Which organizations belong to Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at UHD?
A. MGC at UHD consists of: Alpha Psi Lambda, Gamma Alpha Omega, Sigma Lambda Beta, Kappa Delta Chi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Sigma Kappa Omega, Omega Delta Phi
Q. What is a chapter?
A. Chapters are the collegiate group of a local, national, or international fraternity or sorority. Inter/national organizations often give chapters a name, usually a Greek letter or combinations of Greek letters and/or the state. All chapters are associated with a specific college or university.
Q. When is the best time to meet members of all chapters at UHD in person?
A. UHD Greek Week, Student Involvement Day, “Meet the Greeks”, “GatorServe” Day of Service, and Homecoming Week “Tailgatoring” are some of the best events to meet people belonging to fraternity and sorority chapters at UHD. Look for flyers on campus hallways, UHD CampusGroups and on social media for event dates, times, and locations.
Q. How expensive is it to join a fraternity/sorority and how much are dues?
A. The expenses of a Greek organization will vary by chapter. Overall, the chapter dues will be set by the national organizations and paid by each member. Membership dues can cover expenses like participating in chapter activities, apparel, or initiation of new members.
Q. Can one participate in other activities on campus when they join a fraternity/sorority?
A. Yes! Chapters encourage their members to participate in other campus programs, sports, and clubs. Students often find out about other activities on campus through their Greek peers. It’s also a good way to reach other potential members and show involvement and pride in the college. The great part about being Greek is often having people to join new clubs or intramural sports with.
Q. What are the differences between the various chapters at UHD?
A. Each chapter has their own vibe at UHD. Talking with other members in each fraternity and sorority chapter can offer insights into their group and its unique culture. Some organizations may have evolved over time to represent a particular student interest, culture, or academic focus. Some may have been created around a particular purpose or study. Greek organizations will hold their own set of values and beliefs at the center of their membership, which can be further learned about during recruitment or informational sessions. A group’s values can often be a decision point for students looking to join a Greek organization. It’s also important to note that there are other non-social Greek groups that focus on academic honors, areas of study, or philanthropy for students to join.

A. The UHD Greek Wall is in the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement, on the 2nd floor of One Main Building, down the hall from room S-204.
