Pell Grant

Federal Pell grant is offered to students who submit the FAFSA, and is based on financial need. The U.S. Department of Education sets eligibility amounts for the Pell grant each academic year, and it is typically offered to students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that falls within a certain range.

For the 2023-2024 school year, the award amount can be from $750—$7395, for students whose EFC is less than $6656. The Pell grant is only available to Undergraduate students and is limited to the equivalent of 12 full-time semesters.

Some students who received their annual maximum Pell Grant may be able to receive an additional Pell Grant award if they enroll at least half-time during the summer semester.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Federal SEOG if offered to students who are Pell eligible as a supplement to help cover expenses.  Funding for SEOG is limited, and not all students who are eligible for the Pell grant will receive an award. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 hours per term to qualify.

TEXAS Grant (Towards EXcellence, Access, and Success Grant Program)

The TEXAS Grant was established to assist well-prepared high school graduates with college expenses. The TEXAS Grant is available to both FAFSA and TASFA undergraduate students. There are very specific requirements that must be met in order for students to be eligible for the TEXAS Grant. Priority Deadline is January 15th. Students submitting a valid FAFSA or TASFA application by this date are given priority in receiving awards through the state financial aid programs.

Maintaining Eligibility

To remain eligible for TEXAS grant from year to year students must meet certain academic requirements:
  • At the end of the first year, students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements:
  • Have at least a 2.0 UHD GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Complete 73% of overall hours attempted, and
  • At the end of the second and subsequent years, students must:
  • Have at least a 2.5 UHD GPA on a 4.0 scale,
  • Complete at least 24 credit hours each year

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG)

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is offered to students (graduate and undergraduate) based on financial need and availability of funds. Funding for TPEG is limited, and not all students who are eligible for Pell will receive an award. TPEG is available to both FAFSA and TASFA students. Students must be enrolled in at least half-time per term to qualify.
 

Undergraduate and Graduate Tuition Grant (UTG/GTG)

Need-based grants have been made available through state tuition deregulation. The Graduate and Undergraduate Tuition Grants are offered to students based on financial need and availability of funds. The grants are available to both FAFSA and TASFA students. Undergraduate students receiving UTG must be enrolled in at least 6 hours per term to qualify. Graduate students receiving GTG must be enrolled in at least 4 hours per term to qualify.

TEACH Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program is a federal financial aid program that provides annual grants of up to $4,000* to students who plan to become teachers in high-need subject areas. Students may receive up to $16,000 for undergraduate study and up to $8,000 for graduate study. Students must teach four years at schools that serve low-income families. Students who fail to complete the four-year teaching obligation will have to repay the grant with interest.
